Cutting off hair in ancient Asia (Japan, china, Korea & possibly some other Asian cultures) symbolizes being banished or rejected from their home. In the more modern age that is now, cutting long hair into a short cut means to forget the past, leaving the old and starting anew.

Tidbit: Cain used to have long hair before his heart was fixed, as did John. Afterward, they both cut it off. While John let his hair grow back to the same length as the girl in the photo, Cain kept his as short as it is currently. There’s no real reason for it. But I guess the idea of forgetting the past and starting anew applies. At least to Cain. John was never really keen on keeping with the traditions of his family. Ergo why he changed his name. So perhaps cutting his hair has a bit of both meanings to it.
